Anxiety

What is it?
Anxiety disorders involve more than ordinary nervousness — the worry is frequent, hard to control, and out of proportion to the situation. They are common and highly treatable.
Symptoms
- Excessive worry and restlessness
- Racing heart, sweating, or trembling
- Trouble concentrating or sleeping
- Muscle tension and irritability
Causes
- Genetics and family history
- Brain chemistry and stress hormones
- Trauma or major life stressors
- Caffeine, alcohol, or certain medications
Treatment
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
- SSRIs or SNRIs when appropriate
- Breathing, mindfulness, and regular exercise
- Limiting caffeine and improving sleep
When to see a doctor
- Worry that disrupts work, school, or relationships
- Panic attacks or avoidance of daily activities
- Any thoughts of self-harm — seek help immediately
