Hypothyroidism
An underactive thyroid that does not make enough hormones, slowing the body's metabolism.
What is it?
In hypothyroidism the thyroid gland produces too little thyroid hormone, which affects energy, weight, mood, and many body systems. It is common and treated effectively with daily hormone replacement.
Symptoms
- Fatigue and feeling cold
- Weight gain and constipation
- Dry skin and hair thinning
- Low mood and slowed thinking
Causes
- Autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's)
- Thyroid surgery or radiation
- Certain medications
- Iodine deficiency in some regions
Treatment
- Daily levothyroxine hormone replacement
- Regular blood tests to adjust the dose
- Taking medication consistently on an empty stomach

- Persistent fatigue, cold intolerance, or weight changes
- Swelling at the front of the neck
- Symptoms during or after pregnancy
