Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)
A condition that makes skin itchy, red, dry, and inflamed, often in flares.
What is it?
Eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin condition with a weakened skin barrier. It commonly starts in childhood, runs in families with allergies, and flares in response to triggers.
Symptoms
- Itchy, dry, and sensitive skin
- Red or brownish-gray patches
- Small bumps that may leak when scratched
- Thickened, cracked skin
Causes
- Genetic skin-barrier differences
- Allergens and irritants such as soaps
- Stress and sweating
- Dry or cold weather
Treatment
- Frequent moisturizing with fragrance-free emollients
- Topical corticosteroids during flares
- Avoiding known irritants and triggers
- Gentle, lukewarm bathing

- Eczema that disrupts sleep or daily life
- No improvement with over-the-counter care
